The Annotated NSOP Schedule Book: Part III

Welcome home Class of 2018!

As we head into Labor Day Weekend (LDW what what), NSOP is drawing to a close. Celebrate your last weekend of true freedom by exploring new neighborhoods or sunbathing on one of New York City’s often overlooked beaches. We’ll see you in class on Tuesday!

Understanding myBarnard – MANDATORY
Session I: 9:15-10:15 am (OL Groups 1-35)
Session II: 10:30-11:30 am (OL Groups 36-70)
While this may not seem that important, myBarnard is an essential resource that every Barnard student must know and use. Scheduling, requirements, and grades can all be found in Barnard’s brand new portal (RIP eBear), so learning how to navigate the ins and outs of myBarnard will be necessary for the coming months, if not days. For those who are less tech-savvy than others, consider taking notes (you’ll thank yourself later when you’re trying to remember how to add an L-course to your program). Meet in the Held Lecture Hall in 304 Barnard Hall.

Step Up Bystander Intervention Workshop – MANDATORY
Session I: 9:15-10:15 am (OL Groups 36-70)
Session II: 10:30-11:30 am (OL Groups 1-35)
To be honest, we’re a little unsure what this is about, because it appears to be a new addition to the NSOP schedule from previous years. It’s mandatory, and you have to meet up beforehand with your OL Group, so take it seriously. We all want a happy, supportive environment at Barnard, so be a team player. The workshop will be held in the James Room on the fourth floor of Barnard Hall (follow the signs).

Student Resources Fair
Noon-2:00 pm
Spend a few minutes checking out the many services and resources available to students at Barnard. Even if you’re not super interested in the information, there’s usually free stuff to pick up at each table! The fair will be held on Lehman Lawn and will move under the Lehman Overhang should it rain.

Library Fair
Noon-2:00 pm
Chances are you never really had to use a library in high school (because Google, duh). At some point in your college career, however, you will undoubtedly have to take out a book or do research that even Google can’t find. Take the time to speak with members of the library staff and learn more about the unique services offered in the Barnard Library at Lehman Hall.

Reaching Healthier Heights – MANDATORY
Session I: Noon-1:00 pm (OL Groups 1-35)
Session II: 1:30-2:30 pm (OL Groups 36-70)
This appears to be your last mandatory NSOP event, taking place in the Roone Arledge Auditorium in Lerner Hall. In college away from home, your health is now primarily in your hands. Become familiar with the health services on both sides of campus and understand what resources are available to you when you’re feeling under the weather. Here’s to a happy and healthy year!

Neighborhood Tours
Various time and locations
Check your schedule book for a variety of neighborhood tours leaving Saturday through Monday. There’s so much more to New York City than our little bubble in Morningside Heights, and pretty soon the comfortable familiarity of MoHi will become the dull quiet of Boringside Heights. Explore intriguing neighborhoods to revisit when life above 110th Street gets to be too much.

Meet & Greet
9:30 am-6:30 pm
We want you! Clubs across the Columbia community are looking for new members. Whatever you’re passionate about, there’s a club on campus to welcome you. Stop by Lerner Hall to learn more about how to get involved on campus.

We hope you have a memorable NSOP and look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out to us at Be sure to follow The Nine Ways of Knowing on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram for Barnard news over the course of the year. Interested in writing, editing, photography, or social media? Be on the lookout for our General Interest Meeting in September!
