The Annotated NSOP Schedule Book: Transfer Students

Welcome to Barnard, transfer students!

Welcome to Barnard! While moving into a new dorm and making the transition to college life is awkward for first-year students, transfer students face unique challenges as they begin a new chapter of their college careers. Barnard is well aware of the needs of transfer students during NSOP and has developed a program that introduces them to Barnard but not to “college.” Transfers are welcome to participate in activities alongside the Class of 2017 but have the opportunity to attend events specifically tailored to their experience. For easy reference, Transfer-Only Events are listed on pages nine to eleven of the NSOP 2013 Schedule Book, as well as within the daily schedule of events.

Transfer Dessert Reception
Tuesday, August 27, 7-8pm, Sulzberger Hall, 17th Floor
A required event for Barnard transfers, students have the opportunity to enjoy dessert with Dean Bournoutian, Dean for Transfer Student Services, and their fellow transfers. While this is a valuable opportunity to connect with students also going through the orientation schtick for the second time, it is also a chance to meet Dean Bournoutian, the first point of reference for all transfer concerns. Plus, it’s free dessert and access to best views of New York from Barnard’s campus.

Transfer Individual Adviser Meetings
Wednesday, August 28 to Friday, August 30 (time and location varies with adviser)
It is especially important that transfers meet with their advisers during NSOP to iron out any wrinkles before classes begin. Some topics to discuss include the Nine Ways of Knowing (general education requirements, not us), credits transferred, final transcripts received, and major declaration and requirements. For students transferring into their junior year, a major must be declared and an adviser found ASAP. Which is why you should attend this meeting.

Transfer Social Outing, Peter and the Starcatcher
Friday, August 30, 6:45-10pm
Transfer students have the opportunity to see Peter and the Starcatcher, an off-Broadway production billed as the prequel to Peter Pan. Theater geeks should get excited, though tickets will set you back $34. If interested, visit the Barnard Student Life office in the Diana Center.

Transfer Social Outing, SPiN New York
Saturday, August 31, 12-3pm
For the more athletically inclined, transfer students are invited to check out SPiN Galactic, “a glow-in-the-dark ping-pong social club.” No ticket or pricing information is offered in the Schedule Book, so we’re assuming it’s free. We highly recommend attending. Because reasons.

  1. Actually, what do you expect for an old student for the newly transferred students Or vise versa? Do you think they will become close for just a little time together? You see on this side, when you will move a house you will encounter new neighbors so what you will do? Being aloof for the first time is okay, they need space and time to getting to know each other. -Dorothy of top essay writing services
