The Nine Ways of Knowing has decided to profile some of the amazing women of the class of 2013… and we’re so sad to see them leave!! If you’d like to be featured on the blog or know someone who should definitely be profiled, fill out our tip form or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Name: Mona Abdullah
Hometown: New York, NY
Major: Political Science and Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures
What are you involved in? Taught with Community Impact, Students for Justice in Palestine, and other organizing on and off campus.
Guilty pleasure? I don’t feel like this is a guilty pleasure, but I’ve been told I should be more ashamed… The Game of Thrones books.
Favorite memory from Barnard?
I have so many awesome ones, but I also can’t remember most of them because I’m kind of losing my memory.
A few weeks ago, I was supposed to be working on my thesis with my friends in the 616 computer lab. After we had exhausted all of our usual methods of procrastination, we locked the door to the lab and had swivel chair races. That was pretty awesome… well, until a certain sore loser attempted to push her competitor into the wall (you know who you are!).
Biggest regret of college?
Not taking advantage of office hours more. I realized too late that all these amazing professors are basically willing to communicate their scholarship with us in person. Why read when you can just have the author summarize their thoughts to you?!
Biggest leap of faith during college?
Announcing to my Arab parents (while we were visiting family in Yemen) that I was vegetarian… and then telling them a few days later that I was considering becoming vegan. It was a difficult time in our household.
What will you miss? The classes and the people. Having my friends a phone call away at all times. How beautiful campus is on those rare occasions that we have nice weather.
What won’t you miss? The stress and the all-nighters that I’ve convinced myself are unique to this place.
Favorite place on or off campus
So many awesome places in this city and on this campus. I guess if I had to pick one, I’d say Battery Park Pier at sunset. It is actually breathtaking.
In 5 words or less, what’s next?
I have also been wondering.
Midnight breakfast or Orgo Night? Midnight breakfast any day. I still don’t understand why anyone subjects themselves to Orgo Night.
Who will play you in the biopic of your life?
I’m often told that I resemble Salma Hayek, but I think that’s just cause she has the most Arab sounding name out of everyone in Hollywood.
