Dietary Restrictions? S’Mac Passes the Test

by Jordan Roat

A couple weekends ago, my friend Aviva visited me from Bryn Mawr. Since she’s Celiac and I’m allergic to nuts, (in addition to us both being kosher/vegetarian) it’s hard for us to find places to eat. After some googling, we found S’Mac, short for Sarita’s Macaroni & Cheese, on 12th Street in East Village.

Aviva ordered 4-cheese mac & cheese (pasta + cheddar, munster, gruyere, and pecorino). It was $3 more to use gluten-free pasta and breadcrumbs, but the cost was also proportional to size. Aviva said that she was impressed by the quality of the gluten-free pasta, since apparently it’s hard for gluten-free pasta to taste like normal food.

In terms of nuts, the waitress promised me that everything was nut-free and the only place there were nuts were the peanut butter cookies, which were kept separately. The fact that I am still alive is pretty good evidence that everything was nut-free!

I ordered the Garden Lite (not because of the “lite” part, but for the “garden” part—I’m a huge fan of cauliflower). The Garden Lite had lite cheddar, parmesan, roasted cauliflower and portobello mushrooms, roasted garlic, broccoli, and scallions. It was really, really good.

I definitely recommend S’Mac. With combinations of meat, vegetables, pasta and cheese, there’s something for everyone. They very allergy-aware, with options for cheese with reduced lactate, gluten-free pasta, cheese without animal rennet, as well as awareness of tree nuts/peanuts, eggs, and soy allergies. If you’re ever in the mood to eat a ton of delicious food, you should go to S’Mac (and don’t be afraid to order the Major Munch—it’s a lot, but I finished it all, which means you can too).
