October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the sisters of Alpha Chi Omega are kicking the month off with their First Annual Divas 4 DVAS (Domestic Violence Awareness and Support) Week! Here’s the run down on each day’s events and activities run by the sisters as well as other organizations around the city:
Monday: A Domestic Violence Awareness Conversation
Come hear a discussion moderated and led by Columbia Political Review’s Constance Boozer on issues of domestic violence on campus, at home, in the workplace, and abroad from 7:30 to 8:30pm in C555 Lerner. This conversation will be held in partnership with Men’s Peer Education, GlobeMed, and the Rape Crisis Center. Make sure to grab a cookie afterwards to support victims of domestic violence!
Tuesday: Awareness Ribbon Making/Domestic Violence Awareness Art Exhibit
From 12 to 3pm, visit the sisters of Alpha Chi on the Lerner Ramps and make a Domestic Violence Awareness Ribbon to wear during the month of October in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month while learning about how to further raise awareness and show your support.
Then, stop by the Broadway Room from 7:30 to 10pm to see an art exhibit held in conjunction with NYC’s Center Against Domestic Violence that will showcase art from a program supporting high school students affected by domestic violence and pieces from our own CU artists.
Wednesday: Clothesline Awareness Project/Self-Defense Workshop
This jam-packed day starts with The Clothesline Awareness Project, in conjunction with the Clothesline Project, from 12 to 3pm. Stop by the Lerner Ramps and decorate a shirt with words of comfort and inspiration for victims of domestic violence that will later be hung on a clothesline to garner awareness for domestic violence.
Next, come down to Lerner Party space from 8 to 11pm and embrace your inner Lara Croft by participating in a self-defense class held in conjunction with International Krav Maga! Learn how to protect and defend yourself with highly trained Krav Maga professionals!
Thursday: Carolyn and the Silent Secret
From 7 to 9pm in the West Ramp Lounge, the sisters of AXO will be screening Carolyn and the Silent Secret, the courageous story of Carolyn Cox and her struggle in a 43 year abusive marriage, followed by a discussion on how to support and promote awareness for victims of domestic violence.
Friday: Divas for DVAS Performance Showcase
Stop by Roone Arledge Auditorium from 8:30 to 11pm and get empowered by domestic violence awareness themed performances from Uptown Vocal, CU Ballroom, Black Theater Ensemble, Raw Elementz, Gospel Choir, and Taylor Harvey! Tickets are only $3 at TIC, so make sure to get them in advance!
